Job Description:
Archeologists study the material remains of past human cultures and societies to understand how people lived, interacted with their environment, and developed over time. They use a variety of techniques, including excavation, survey, and analysis of artifacts and other materials, to uncover and interpret the evidence of past human activity.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting archaeological fieldwork, including survey and excavation
- Analyzing and interpreting archaeological data, including artifacts, ecofacts, and features
- Writing reports and publications on archaeological findings
- Collaborating with other researchers and specialists in related fields
- Managing and supervising field crews and other staff
- Presenting research findings to academic and professional audiences
- Advising government agencies and other organizations on archaeological issues
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or a related field
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Experience with fieldwork and excavation techniques
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations related to archaeology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in archaeology or a related field
- Experience working in a specific geographic or time period
- Specialization in a specific subfield of archaeology (e.g. prehistoric, historical, maritime, etc.)
- Experience with computer programs and technologies used in archaeology
- Strong writing and publishing record in academic journals and other publications.
Salary Range:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for archeologists in the USA is $62,410 per year. Entry-level positions typically start at around $40,000-$50,000 per year, while experienced archeologists can earn up to $90,000 or more per year.
