Job Description:
Machinists are skilled tradespeople who operate and maintain machines that cut, shape, and form metal and other materials. They use a variety of tools and equipment, including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders, to produce precision parts for a variety of industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and medical.
Responsibilities:
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications
- Setting up and adjusting machines to produce parts that meet specifications
- Operating machines to cut, shape, and form metal and other materials
- Inspecting finished parts to ensure they meet quality standards
- Performing routine maintenance and repairs on machines
- Keeping accurate records of production and inventory
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Vocational or technical training in machining
- Several years of experience as a machinist
- Knowledge of machine shop mathematics and blueprint reading
- Proficient in the use of various machine shop tools and equipment
Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision
- Good problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy materials
- Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) and computer numerical control (CNC) software is a plus
Salary Range:
The average salary for a machinist in the USA is around $45,000 per year, with a range of $35,000 to $60,000 per year.
